Russia demands an end to US occupation of Syria's al-Tanf area

MOSCOW, (ST)- Russia has renewed calls on the United States to end its occupation of the Syrian al-Tanf area in Homs countryside near the borders with Jordan.

"US forces stationed illegally in Syria's al-Tanf are blocking the road that connects Iraq and Syria. We demand an end to their occupation", Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin told journalists on Wednesday.

Washington established a military base 24 km west of the al-Tanf border crossing in the Syrian desert back in 2016 and used it to train armed groups. The US occupation troops in this area are holding thousands of displaced Syrians in

Rukban camp within a very difficult humanitarian situation. They continuously provide support and protection to the terrorist groups who in turn  keep blackmailing the camp's residents and controlling all the humanitarian aid sent to civilians there.

Jabarov: US forces will withdraw from Syria sooner or later

On his part, Vladimir Jabarov, the First Deputy Chair of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, asserted that the American military presence in the Syrian territories is illegal.

In a statement on Wednesday, Jabarov said  "that it is incomprehensible on what grounds these US forces are present in Syria. Their presence is illegal."

He reiterated that Washington will withdraw from Syria sooner or later.

In the meantime, the  Russian President's Special Representative for Middle East and Africa Affairs and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov reiterated the importance of commitment to Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Speaking to journalists in Sochi, Bogdanov said that all the official documents and data say that all concerned parties must commit themselves to respecting the territorial integrity, national unity and sovereignty of the Syrian state."
